Upgrading a Windows 2008 cluster running SQL 2008 to Windows |
|
I am trying to upgrade a 2-node Windows 2008 Cluster with SQL Server 2008
installed to Windows 2008 R2.
I have followed the Microsoft practice of evicting one of the nodes from the
cluster, removing SQL Server, upgrading the OS to R2 and creating a new
cluster which all work fine.
My issue is that I need to migrate the SQL Server 2008 instance from the old
cluster to the new Windows 2008 R2 cluster but can't see how to do it.
I have tried using the cluster migration wizard but this does not allow me
to install SQL 2008 onto the R2 node. I have tried installing an instance of
SQL 2008 onto the upgraded node (making a SQL 2008 clustered node) but the
migration wizard doesn't copy the database details across and so the resource
won't come on-line.
The Microsoft Cluster upgrade document Migration Paths for Migrating to a
Failover Cluster Running Windows Server 2008 R2) states that I need to use
the upgrade functionality built into the SQL Server Installation Wizard but I
can't see how to do this.

Can anyone help here? I have the same issue. I have a 2 node Windows 2008
cluster running SQL 2008. I want to upgrade the OS to Server 2008 R2. How
do I get SQL 2008 onto the new R2 node?
