iOS 64bit support
News Group: embarcadero.public.delphi.platformspecific.ios

I was wondering if anyone knew how Embarcadero intends to deal with the
upcoming deadline on 1st Feb 2015 that all new apps must include 64bit
support? I'm hoping that they have been working on 64bit support for
iOS apps. If not then using Firemonkey for building iOS apps is going
to be a bit of a non-starter if you intend to submit them to the app
store!

Thanks

Paul

I would agree but just add that based on the recent linker fix the XE5 seems like lowest supported version anyways.

IMHO something like recent linker fix would be ideal - XE5 and newer.

Reasonably priced fix for XE5/XE6 would be OK as well (XE7 fix being free). Actual fair price varies but i'd say no more than $50 would be OK.

We're on maintenance so covered but I still think EMB should make it really hard to opt out of maintenance for any new new license purchase or upgrade

I agree, it seems from Apple's upcoming requirement that it would mean
all older XEx compilers would become obsolete for issuing apps to the
iOS app store.

Precisely how that is handled is a judgement call but if *only* XE8
supported 64bit iOS with no others getting some form of patch/pack then
first of all everyone using Delphi < XE8 would have no choice but to
upgrade.

That's not to say that a patch or upgrade pack for older XE versions
would be a freebie but logistically it seems in order to give the best
result all round some form of offering to get people using older
versions on to a 'latest' version that supported 64bit iOS is going to
be essential both for the developers and for Embarcadero.

If people are only supporting Android and/or Windows then the problem
is not so acute.

If you were Embarcadero what would you do - bearing in mind the bills
have to be paid, babies fed and on-going compiler development financed?

Pure speculation here as well but this one would be tricky to limit to XE8 only.

It's one thing to not support newer iOS versions but whole another to say "you can no longer submit any apps to app store" (only 5 months after one might have bought XE7)

Are you sure? All the roadmap actually says about iOS is:

{quote}
Features and Technologies After 2014

There are other platforms and features we are actively researching and investigating,
and other technologies under evaluation that are not part of the current
2014 roadmap.

- Support for future versions of Android and iOS
{quote}

I suppose that could emcompass 64bit. The only explicit mention of 64bit
is this one:

- Mac OS X 64bit compiler, toolchain, and libraries

It is on the roadmap, release dates have not been mentioned. They are aware of
the deadline.

Since this is a new compiler usually that will be in a major release so I would
guess it would be in XE8. It is very rare to see them add a new compiler to an
existing product. That is pure speculation on my part based on past history.
If I actually knew I would not be able to say due to NDA's.
